One of the many teachers in our Ohana, Lynda N., has finally found her niche...trail running. She's ran both of the first two of the H.U.R.T. series and been the main instigator of getting the gang together for trail run Monday. Here's her first race review regarding this past Saturday's (10May2008) trail run:
The "Run with a View" trail run was definitely the most beautiful run I've been on (but then again, I guess I haven't been on THAT many runs - lol). A lot of spots for scenic shots (I'm surprised Ray didn't stop along the way to take pics)...great views of Pearl Harbor and the West side...
Although the initial thought of running the hills was intimidating, the first 1/2 mile going up the street was totally unexpected. That, actually, to me, was the most difficult part of the entire race. Ask anyone there, I had to WALK up the second half 1/4 mile because I lost all my steam before I started! By then, all the guys were happily up the hill like goats gallivanting on a mountain side (of course I don't mean you looked like goats - just acclimated to the incline). There was one slippery dry spot, about 2 miles in (a hill going down), just before the so-called "hair pin" turn, but for the most part, the course was nice. The one aid station was situated in the area just as I needed some quenching...and the weather was perfect - overcast and cool.
If you like running downhill (like me), you'd love this run because there is a long stretch at the end - perhaps the last 2 miles (?) where you can practically "fly" down the jeep road, back onto the street and through the two orange cones. There, you will be greeted by drinks, fresh fruit and food (homemade, I might add). Yeah, one thing about this H.U.R.T. series - they've got THE BEST refreshments afterwards...
Jeff (1:26:16), Johnny (1:26:20), and Mark (1:26:30) came in earlier on, I came in at 1:41:37 and Ray and Brenda came in just a bit later - they were enjoying themselves and the view the most, out of all of us...

I would definitely do this run again next year, and I think if you haven't already tried it, you should seriously think about it. It's definitely doable and beautiful (does that kinda rhyme?) Mango Madness is coming up on June 14. I'm gonna try it...we'll see if I die or not.
Great run and review...guess that means she's no longer a rookie at either. Hope to hear more from others as well.
